Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'ni April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), was an American Tejano singer. The "Queen Tejano music", her contributions in music and fashion helped make her one of the most famous Mexican-American entertainers of all time. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place in their ranking of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin songs chart. Because of her clothing choices the media referred to her as the Tejano Madonna. Her clothes choices have brought her the nickname "Tejano Madonna" by media outlets. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was often criticized and was refused bookings in venues across Texas for her performance of Tejano music--a male-dominated music genre. However, her popularity grew as she was awarded the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, which she won nine consecutive times. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name in the same year. During that time, her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. Its commercial success earned music critics the right to call it the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor", was a hit and became her signature tune. Live! (1993) won the award for Best American/Mexican album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to win this award. Amor Prohibido became one the most popular Latin albums in America in 1994. Critically, it was credited as the catalyst for Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It was one of Latin music's most popular subgenres.
